Still a Favorite--Almost 40 years later...
This was my very favorite book in elementary school, and I bought a copy to share with my stepdaughter just a few years ago. The drawings are charming, and the writing is quite clever. The fact that the main character is basically a juvenile delinquent is somehow forgivable, perhaps because Piper Paw is a cat. But the family dynamic is undeniably real. And while we hope our kids won't turn into Piper, he and his family offer important lessons about love, family and compromise--and the importance of letting our kids (and parents) be who they are. This is one of those books I never owned but never forgot. And long after I learned to read, I still wanted my dad to read it to me. I remember distinctly it had a few "big words" I had to ask him about. (Piper's father offers to build bookshelves when he discovers his son is keeping comic books in the bathroom--the elder Mr. Paw refers to this as "literature," a word with which I was unfamiliar.) This is what makes it a great book to share with children--it's one of those rare creations that is thoroughly enjoyable on both kid and grown-up levels. The aforementioned example gave my dad an opportunity to teach me a new word, and it sparked a discussion as to what actually constitutes literature. It also gave me an introduction to sarcasm. I'm sorry it's out of print, but there are plenty of used editions available. So order a dog-eared copy and love it to death a little more!

The First Book of Rebellion for Tiny Kids
No Kiss For Mother intrigues me to this day and my kids, a girl and boy, are well into their thirties and still marvel at this book. In some ways, this is a very violent book. MaMa Kitty actually slaps Piper, her beloved son. She has a terrible day and loses her temper and makes a bad mistake in her mothering--MaMa Kitty is flawed! MaMa Kitty, even though she adores the ever-misbehaving Piper, is not the perfect mother. This simply stunned my kids, especially my son. Piper "withholds" his kisses out of spite, Piper holds his mom hostage emotionally, Piper willfully deceives his father, Piper "acts out" in school--my kids' eyes were HUGE! Piper is a bad boy, but Piper is also a REAL boy, and he's a caring boy, too. My son so loved this book that if we went to the library and it was checked out, he was devastated! I have bought several copies of this book for my kids and their friends and nearly everyone I know who has grandchildren. It actually sort of gives kids "permission" to be their real, flawed selves and still be forgiven and loved. It's extremely honest and complex, as is life. It has value well into adulthood, in my view. LOVE IT!

Great for that funny whimsical section of book shelf
My opinion may be skewed. This book came out when i was a child and it was the first book my friend and i purchased at a book fair Our parents laughed and howled at how evil this child was. I had to get it again as some memorabilia of my childhood and something to pass down to my children. The artist in this book was wonderful.

DESCRIPTION OF BOOK FROM PUBLISHER'S WEEKLY IS INCORRECT!!
The Publisher's Weekly description of this book at the beginning of this listing of paperback version of "No Kiss For MOther" is NOT for this book, it is not about a cat/dog offspring. It is all about a bad little boy cat named Piper with an overly affectionate mother who does not want to see him as the rough little guy that he is. One of my son's favorites when he was 3/4 years old. I bought a copy just to read to him again -- he's 22 years old now and still enjoyed it.

Head-scratchingly wonderful!
Tomi Ungerer is just amazing. He's not everyone's cup of tea and that's what makes him so powerful. Great story. I have no idea what age it's good for. I'd say it is so painfully honest that anyone over the age of about 8 or 9 might have trouble handling the emotions it unlocks.

This is a book I loved when I read it to my children and now it is loved by my grandchildren. Forget all those gooodie-two-shoes rewarded for their virtuous conduct, Piper Paws yearns to break free of suffocating maternal affection and shows us just how far love, when tested, can go. It will make you desperate to lay your hands on all the other anarchic Ungerer offerings.

Prepare to laugh out loud at the Paw family, a story with a sweet ending.
I remember this book from my children’s childhood. It’s completely brilliant, possibly even more amusing for adults! The only problem is, I’d forgotten how many beatings poor Piper gets for his misdemeanours - there’s no way I could read this to my grandson now for that reason. I absolutely loved reading it again, and it took me right back to a Christmas morning in the seventies when my son got this in his stocking. That copy is lost, sadly, hence the replacement which I bought when Tomi Ungerer died.

Another trip down memory lane if you grew up in the 70s/80s
I bought this for my toddler daughter as I remembered it from my childhood. Wonderful detailed illustrations. Funny story. Very sort of American/Mittel European post-War feel to the drawings. Tomi Ungerer is one of my favourite illustrators. He's got that same slightly dark Roald Dahl edge to his work, which makes him fun for grown-ups too.

No Kiss for Mother
Perfect - exactly as I remember it only better - quick delivery - highly recommended to anyone who remembers it from around 40 years ago but would be equally attractive to a modern child - I bought it so that my son can share a brilliant childhood memory with his son and they have both been absolutely delighted - Piper Paw is a marvellous, timeless character and just to see his face on the cover made us all smile and continues to do so.
