Flat may not be the best way to depict 1000 for some kids
I ordered this set to use with my daughter who's doing 1st grade math. The set came well packaged and included all of the parts as advertised. It is a flat, magnetic set for use on whiteboards or fridges or whatever metal surface you prefer. It sticks pretty well and feels like it's made of durable materials. As much as the space-saving feature of it being flat appealed to me, it did seem to cause confusion for my child. She grasped the concept of the 1s, 10s and hundreds blocks but was completely thrown off by the 1000s cube. I ended up having to get her a traditional 3-dimensional set of base ten blocks so that the cube was proportionately large enough for her to understand that there was room for 1000 blocks within it. I think that this might work better for other/older kids or in a classroom setting where the teacher is using this to model at the board while the children have traditional manipulative sets at their desks. In our homeschool setting, it's just not as useful as I'd prefer it to be. Thankfully it doesn't take up much room so I can store it easily and try again in a year or so to see if we can replace the bulky 3D set with it once the concepts are more solidly ingrained.
