Beware, thin metal
I bought these for the beach. First use and two of the stakes bent when I was pushing them into the sand. I am an experienced camper and know to push them in straight and was careful but still they collapsed/bent. This is completely unacceptable. I would stay away, the ones I had either were defective or they are just made of thin metal.I contacted the manufacturer and it seems these are intended for a different technique called dead-man which buries the stake in the sand horizontally. I corrected my review but still at 3 stars because these probably should come with instructions if they don't behave like typical tent stakes. That being said, the manufacturer was very responsive and offered replacements. I'm a happy customer and hope that they will work well once I use the new method.

GREAT for loosely packed sand
Camping near the beach brings up a unique set of camping and gear challenges, one of those is finding stakes that stay in the loosely packed sand of the campsites. After doing research, including reading some of the reviews in here, we decided these were an acceptable money risk - we are budget-ly challenged. I am so glad we bought these. The holes along the stakes allow you to tie a guy line at any point to bury the line deeper to create a sort of 'dead man' anchor but with a stake instead of a special bag you have to dig a hole for, fill and bury. The sand is loosely packed, but we aren't supposed to dig at the campsites. We used these for the big tarp we use and needed something big and strong to take possible wind or someone tripping over a guy line. Last year with wind bursts our tarp guy lines had to be restaked every day - we also had crappy tarp poles that wouldn't stay extended. We put our line at the bottom most hole, and facing the concave side toward the tent, sank the stakes at a 45 degree angle, tops tilting away from the tent. The guy lines went right into the sand, and the stake was buried almost to the top. We did have one stake that bent slightly, but we later discovered there was a tree root underneath...that stake is now covered in pine sap, ick, the stake went right through the root. They held all weekend, were easy to pull out and since we bought 2 sets, we were able to use these to guy line our new lovely Kelty tarp poles as well :) Investing in good camping gear is a must if you plan on camping often, or even just once a year. Good dependable gear that can make or break the trip.September 18, 2012. I see I forgot to mention that these stakes are very lightweight, almost feels like holding air. 8 stakes hardly weight anything! I have read other reviews since some on serious camper sites, some from folks who used them for Burning Man, where the winds can gust up to 50 or 60 without storms.

One bent horribly from hitting a small rock
Cracks in the bends when received. Might have sent back, but there was no time and I needed them for a campout. One bent horribly from hitting a small rock. Not very sturdy. Wouldn't recommend if there is any chance of encountering anything other than pure sand.

work well for the snow, lightweight, easy to bend
You have to be careful with these. They hold well in the snow if you bury them deep and let them sit for a while. We found the only non-snowy campsite around waist-deep snow during our overnight backpacking trip to the Sierras in April and I managed to bend one of these trying to push one of these into the dirt. I know they are not designed for that but it still seems like the stake bent too easily and I'm not the Man of Steel.

Darn good stake!
I bought these stakes for 4 days of beach camping on the Padre National Seashore barrier island. I am extremely happy that I bought these instead of trying to use the crappy stakes that come with most tents. Using a camp shovel, I buried these about a foot down using a dead-man tie down (stake is horizontal instead of vertical). The sand was light and loose so I jabbed the sharp edge of the stake into the side of the hole before packing the sand on tight and high. The winds in this national park are constant day and night; we had occasional gusts 30-40 mph. I can hardly count the number of airborne tents I saw due to people using standard stakes ... no matter how intense the wind, these puppies didn't budge! They are sturdy but lightweight. I can't ding them for this but I wish they came with a little carrying bag. Note: these are probably too large to fit through normal stake rings if you are regular camping and want to stake directly through the rings.

Quality product
I purchased these for camping on the sand at Assateague State Park. These stakes were solid and my tent didn't budge. It would be nice if they had a hook on the top to catch the eyelet of the tent but the holes allow you to tie things securely which worked just as well. The tops did bend a little from pounding them in with a hammer but were easily straightened with a hammer once I pulled them back out. I would recommend these to anyone needed a longer, heavier duty tent stake.

Excellent product. Took these with our Large Sand tent (10' x 10') and it worked great, even on the windy beaches of Ocean City, NJ. Highly recommended. 4 stars since after 6 uses on the beach, the stakes started to slightly bend, but I think that's expected.

Wider than other snow/sand stakes so holds better. The holes have a few sharp edges that may be problematic if small cords are going through them but they are better finished that older traditional snow stakes such as SMC.
