Serrapeptase is an enzyme produced by serratia bacteria living in silkworms. Silkworms use it to dissolve their cocoon while emerging from the moth. Researchers have applied this unique characteristic to modern medicine. Serrapeptase has been used as a drug in Europe and Asia for more than 25 years, and it is used increasingly in North America. What makes Serrapeptase interesting and distinct from other enzymes is that it affects only non-living tissues. This is due to Serrapeptase ability to target specific proteins. According to health Canada, Serrapeptase reduces swelling and pain from inflammation. It is a proteolytic enzyme, used to reduce the symptoms of pain, quantity of secretion, ability to perceive smell, stuffy nose and ears, and nose and/or throat infections. It is also a mucolytic enzyme, which helps break down mucous.
