Q: If you input your dmx on an "xlr type" cable, can you use the output off from the ethernet port. Sort of like using this as a converter?

You can freely mix the use of the RJ45 (not ethernet, but using same connector) ports and the 3-channel DMX ports. Use either input for DMX in, and use either input for DMX out. So, in that sense, you CAN use it as a converter. Ethernet cable, even though only three wires are used, makes a fine substitute for DMX cable, and you can get it in many colors and lengths. (Official DMX connectors have 5 pins, though 3-pin connectors and the RJ45 connector are very popular, especially for these kinds of boxes.)

The needed power supply is dependent on how much you are sending signal too. For example, I'm using this for a 15' strand of RGB LED rope, that uses 30 Watts at 12V, so the 12V 2.5A power supply I'm using JUST does what I need. If I tried to do a longer strand, I'd have problems because it would require more amperage. This unit has a max output rating of 8A per channel (24A total). You need a little basic electrical understanding to figure out what is suitable for your needs. Watts = Volts x Amperage
