*Wonderful book but not for everyone, returning*
This book is definitely beautifully illustrated and I love how it goes through types of homes. It’s truly a unique book, hence 5 stars. But I will say this- it’s not for everyone. I am returning based on 3 things: a little boy has a nude bottom (which is meant to be tongue and cheek- not offensive), mermaid is topless (although hair covers her), and it talks about the home of a “norse god”. Anyhow, I’m just stating these 3 things for other parents to be aware of and not trying to talk bad about this book. It really is lovely, just not for us :)

My very favorite children’s book!
I first read this to a friend’s child about 6 years ago and knew I needed to get this book one day when I have my own kid! I now have a 4 year old and we have been loving this book for 3 years. It’s fun to spot the bird on every page and she thinks “the bum” on the shoe house page is sooo funny. When she was 2 she would just stare at that one page for 20 minutes laughing and laughing. Such a precious book and especially for anyone who lives in an unconventional home, like an RV or boat!

Less House, More Home!
We loved this book, and I think the objections raised about African or African-American people being in poorer homes unnecessarily assumes the worst about the author's intentions. Isn't it possible that the author is trying to raise her own objections about how certain people groups have been unfairly subjected to impoverished conditions? Also, in the side-by-side comparison mentioned by some of the comments, the wealthy white woman outside her mansion looks miserable and unhappy, while the poor Kenyan blacksmith outside his shack looks friendly and happy. As someone who grew up in poverty eating lots of rice and beans, or beans and cornbread, or bean burritos (pretty much anything involving beans), I identify with Ellis's criticism of wealth and I don't think it's an accident that she put these two images side by side. Perhaps she isn't the world's most racially articulate children's author, but focusing only on the shortcomings of this book is ungenerous in my opinion.

from a book lover
I have recently ordered this book for a baby "sprinkle" (2nd baby shower) and once I saw it, I quickly ordered one for my home library. And I don't (yet) have grandchildren either. But.....I am a big on for thought - and discussion- provoking books, and the artwork on this is such a bonus. If you like a childrens book that is off the beaten path and lovely as well, this might be for you too.

Very good book, beautifully illustrated
The illustrations are gorgeous and extremely creative. I also love the idea of this book, giving kids a chance to consider what home means and imagining being in different environments. I got this for my 1 year old but she’s too young for it. More appropriate for age 3+, I think.
